Maya

12/27 update: Sweet little Maya will have been in rescue with us for 1 whole year next month. She has come a long way in that time, she is now indifferent to her foster family’s dog savvy cats and also has learned to do okay with calm, settled dogs. She continues to learn manners. She is finished her Heartworm treatment and fully recovered with no restrictions. She is just the sweetest little girl. She would love to have a home to call her very own before she reaches the one year mark!! She would do best with a fenced in yard or an adopter who would commit to leash walking!

Hi my name is Maya! I am a young Labrador Mix, my foster momma says some people call me a “shorti-Lab”…I have no idea what that is but she says I am adorable! I found myself dumped in a high kill rural shelter with my friend Pixie. I was very pregnant and my friend Pixie had just had puppies (although our people did not bring the pups to the shelter). The kind volunteers felt so bad for us they looked and looked for a rescue to take us, the kind people at Black Dogs & Company Rescue said they would take us! Before I could be transported to Maryland I had my puppies on the cold shelter floor. We were transported to an Animal Hospital but a couple days later two of my puppies died…I was so upset but I had to keep going for my four other babies. When my foster momma met the transport one of my puppies was fading, she rushed us all to the rescue’s Vet but they couldn’t save my baby. Then that night another one of my babies died in my foster mommy’s hands…we both cried and cried. She took me and my last two puppies to the Emergency Vet to find out what was happening. I had a bad infection, and my puppies and I stayed there for two days although we couldn’t be crated together. My foster momma brought us home I was so happy to be with my babies again! I just breathed them in! My foster mom gave my puppies supplemental tube feedings but something called a digestive tract was not fully formed and they couldn’t absorb any nutrients. My last two babies died in my foster momma’s hands. We both loved them so much. My foster family did their best to console me and I tried to console my foster mom, she cried for a long time, she thought she failed me. They also learned that I was something called heartworm positive, the rescue had me treated and I am feeling a lot better! Once I started feeling better they learned I do not like kitties at all! They are intruders in my space! I also had never been socialized with any other dogs other than Pixie and I hadn’t been taught any manners. So I am learning manners in my foster home, a kind lady at the Vet’s office also works with me twice a week at something called “doggie daycare”, I am learning how to interact with other dogs. I am so very grateful for this life I have been given, I always give my foster family kisses! Especially for feeding me! Having food in my belly and a warm fluffy place to sleep is the best! I also really like the little people in my foster home, they are a lot of fun to play with!

If you are interested in adopting, please complete an application at blackdogsandcompanyrescue.org. Vet references and a home visit are required. Adoption fee of $300 includes age appropriate vaccinations, deworming, spay or neuter and microchip.
